How can you tell if a friendship is genuine?
Knowing your friends is all very well, but the question of sincerity is just as important. As we’ve seen, many friendships are no longer reciprocal and some can even become toxic, but we don’t always realize it. So what defines a genuine friendship, and how do you recognize it?
A genuine friendship is often long-standing, punctuated by shared stories and experiences. It’s the misfortunes and joys shared over the years that have strengthened your bond. A friend who knows everything about you. However, true friends can also be newcomers to our lives. Time isn’t the golden rule that determines a true friendship. Much stronger elements form the basis of a genuine friendship:
- commitment
- authenticity
- sincerity
- confidence
- honesty
- trust
In the end, our real friends are the ones who catch up with us, worry about us, and are loyal to us. Those with whom we’re not afraid to be ourselves and who know how to listen to our little secrets, but who also know how to tell us theirs.
A genuine friendship is OK, but it also needs to be healthy and balanced
Sometimes we get so caught up in the hectic pace of our lives that we don’t always realize that some of our relationships, including friendships, aren’t necessarily good for our well-being. A friendship may be genuine, but it can also be a source of stress, anxiety, or negativity in your life. This is the case, for example, of that friend you love dearly, but who spends all her time complaining, or the one who, under the pretext of advice, criticizes you a bit too much 😖. So how do you assess the health of your friendships? What are the signs of a balanced and positive friendship?
- Open communication: A solid friendship is built on open and honest communication. You should feel comfortable expressing your feelings, sharing your concerns, and discussing your problems without fear of being judged or misunderstood. A genuine friend will listen to you and support you even in difficult times.
- Mutual respect: Respect is a pillar of every relationship, including friendships. It means that your time, space, limits, and feelings are respected. ⚠️ You should never feel taken advantage of or undervalued by a true friend.
- Equality: A healthy friendship shouldn’t be a one-way street. It requires giving and receiving, listening and talking, supporting and being supported. If you feel the balance is off, it may be time to discuss your concerns with your friend.
- Honesty: A genuine friendship is a safe place for the truth, even when that truth may be painful or difficult to tell. A true friend will be honest with you, even if that honesty can sometimes be uncomfortable.
Remember that we deserve friendships that make us happy, support us, and help us to grow. If you notice signs of toxicity or inequality in a friendship, don’t hesitate to discuss it or even question it. Because, after all, life’s too short to spend time in relationships that don’t fulfill us. We’re all incredible women, who deserve equally incredible friendships! 🌺
